The goal of intravenous (IV) sedation is a very relaxed state where the patient is perfectly comfortable and still has control of his/her own airway (breathes by him/herself). To accomplish this goal, an IV catheter will be placed in a vein in the arm or hand. Various medications will be administered to make the patient relaxed, non-apprehensive, and sleepy. The patient will not be unconscious. Most patients report remembering only the start of the IV and being driven home by their escort. Local anesthetic will also be used to numb the surgical area.
