We all are aware of the importance of brushing our teeth. However, those of us who have children also know how difficult it is to persuade them to brush their teeth, too. The risk of cavities and gum disease do not effectively motivate youngsters to brush their teeth on a regular basis. So, what does?

In this article, our experienced team at Lakeview Dental Clinic in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, shares a few fun ways to teach your kid how to brush their teeth.

  • Get Them a New Toothbrush

Although it may seem insignificant to you, the novelty of a new toothbrush may motivate your youngster to begin brushing. Child-themed toothbrushes are available from a variety of manufacturers and most of them depict their favorite characters from children's television series or films.

  • Let Them Pick the Toothpaste Flavor

Allow your youngster to express his or her individual preferences. If your kids say they don't like one flavor of toothpaste, let them try a few different brands until they find the one they prefer.

  • Reward Them

What drives your child's motivation? Make a reward sheet with stickers and let them add one every time they brush. Allow them to choose their bedtime story if they are a reader. You can also teach them to be proud of their bright smile and explain that their dental care routine is what keeps their teeth healthy.

  • Brush Together as Family

Brushing your teeth as a family is enjoyable and kids will appreciate it. Because of the positive reinforcement, they'll look forward to cleaning their teeth every time.

  • Use Character Example

What is the name of the character your child can't seem to get enough of? Brushing is a topic that appears in many children's programs and literature. You can use their favorite character as an example to explain why brushing is important.

  • Combine the Routine With a TV Show

Kids will be more open to brushing their teeth if you allow them to watch a favorite program after or even during. This will help them get adjusted to the routine and enjoy brushing their teeth more.
