The health of your mouth can affect your life in a number of ways. When your teeth and gums are healthy, you can enjoy eating your favorite foods, speaking clearly, smiling, and laughing without embarrassment. Your teeth play an important role in your self-confidence. When you feel self-conscious about your smile, it can negatively affect your social interactions, your work life, and even your personal life.

Here are some ways to maintain good oral health tips you need keep in your mind:

Brushing Your Teeth Regularly

When brushing, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle while gently using short strokes. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day will also help to keep your teeth healthy. While shopping for a new toothbrush, consider one that has an ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal indicates that the toothbrush has been examined for effectiveness, safety, and ease of use.

Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles become frayed. If you notice any bleeding or sore gums after brushing, make an appointment with your dentist.

Flossing Regularly

Did you know that you should be flossing every day? Even if you are taking great care of your teeth at home, you still need to commit to flossing. Brushing covers about 65% of your teeth's surfaces. Your toothbrush can't reach in between your teeth, so that's where flossing comes in. By flossing, you can remove food particles and plaque buildup from between your teeth.

If you aren't sure how to floss, or you're having trouble flossing, ask your dentist or dental hygienist for tips.

Rinsing With an Antibacterial Mouthwash

Choosing a mouthwash with antibacterial properties will help fight bacteria in the mouth, decreasing the risk of oral diseases. Antibacterial mouthwashes will reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth, lowering your risk of gingivitis and periodontitis.

Avoiding Smoking and Chewing Tobacco

If you're a smoker, talk with your dentist about options for quitting. Smoking and chewing tobacco increase your chances of gum disease. Cigarettes and chewing tobacco contain a lot of chemicals that irritate your gums. This irritation increases your risk of gum disease. Smoking also irritates your gingiva and can cause the gingiva to pull away from your teeth. This leads to pockets, which are susceptible to infection.

Eating a Balanced Diet

In addition to regular dental visits, you can maintain good oral health at home by eating a balanced diet. Avoid sugary foods and beverages, and eat more fruits and vegetables. This will help keep your mouth clean and reduce your risk of tooth decay.

If you do consume sugary foods and beverages, be sure to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with water afterward. You may also want to drink a glass of water to help wash away residue.

Keeping Your Teeth Clean After Meals

If you want to keep your teeth as healthy as possible, you should clean your smile after you finish eating.

Brushing your teeth after eating will remove bacteria from the surfaces of your enamel. When you brush, remember to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the front and back.
