Things You Need to Know Before Getting Veneer

Veneers are great options for patients who want to improve the aesthetics of their smile but aren’t sure if they want to commit to significant changes like a crown or bridge. At Lakeview Dental Clinic, they are thin shells placed over the facial surface of the teeth to improve their appearance by making them whiter and straighter. They’re also an excellent way to cover flaws like chips and cracks. Their strength and durability mean that they can last for decades at a time with proper care.

While veneers are durable, they aren’t invincible. It’s essential to practice good oral hygiene with daily brushing and flossing to reduce the chances of them sustaining damage. If they are damaged in any way, it’s essential to contact your dentist as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for repair. It’s also recommended that you avoid chewing on ice or other hard foods to prevent damaging your veneers.

The Procedure for Veneer

A professional laboratory can make dental veneers, or a cosmetic dentist in-office during a procedure that takes just a few appointments. The dentist will first prepare your teeth for the veneers by removing a small amount of enamel from the surface of your tooth. Then, the dentist will take an impression of your teeth to send to the lab, where they will fabricate the veneers. Once ready, your dentist will check them for fit and color and bond them to the front surface of your teeth with permanent cement.

Veneers generally last between five and ten years before they need to be replaced or repaired. Maintaining good oral hygiene with regular brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, and seeing your dentist every six months to keep your veneers and protect tooth health.

Why Would I Need Veneers?

Veneers can be a great option if you have several cosmetic imperfections affecting the appearance of your smile. These include teeth that are out of alignment, uneven gaps, chips, and cracks in your teeth. Even minor cosmetic concerns can harm your confidence. However, these issues also resist traditional whitening methods like professional whitening trays or strips. Veneers are an excellent option to correct several of these issues at once. Many people choose porcelain veneers as the solution to all their cosmetic woes.

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth-shaped shells designed to fit over your existing teeth. Crafted from high-grade porcelain, these are designed to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. This means they will appear translucent, just like a natural tooth, rather than opaque and artificial.
